After watching the Apple WWDC keynote earlier this month, I couldn't wait to get my hands on the beta's for Mac OS X Yosemite and iOS 8. I was able to get hooked up 24 hours later, and have since been curiously discovering the new design and features.

I've always loved the attention to tiny (yet unexpected) details Apple puts into its products and design. Case in point, the icon for TextEdit. In OS X 10.5 Leopard, the icon contained a rendition of the Crazy Ones text (see below), which is the narrative from Apple's iconic Think Different ad. The copy perfectly embodies the spirit of Apple and its customers. After reading it, you can't help but say to yourself, "Wow, this company is different. I too am a rebel, a misfit, a round peg in a square hold. I want to change the world."

In OS X 10.10 Yosemite, Apple killed the text, instead opting for a simpler icon. By all means, it's a superbly crafted icon. The pen looks hyper-realistic. But somehow, a bit of what makes Apple Apple is lost. Sad to see this go.
